Comprehensive primary and secondary healthcare services for the people of South Sudan.
Health Sector Focus
Our health sector focuses on:
- Identification and treatment of pre-existing health conditions (weight & nutrition status, anaemia, hypertension, STIs)
- Early detection of complications arising during pregnancy (preeclampsia, gestational diabetes)
- Health promotion and disease prevention (vaccinations, malaria prevention, nutrition counselling, micronutrient supplements, family planning)
- Birth preparedness and complication planning (emergency plans, breastfeeding counselling, ART for HIV positive women, PMTCT)
Specific ANC activities include:
- Identify pregnant women
- Counsel on early initiation and compliance with ANC
- Refer pregnant women for ANC, PMTCT, STI prevention and treatment
- Conduct monthly ANC mobile clinic services
- Identify high risk cases and refer to county or state hospitals
- Conduct nutritional counselling
- Provide micronutrient supplementation: Iron, Folic Acid, Vitamin A
- Promote malaria prevention activities such as LLINs and IPT
- Manage moderate complications and risks of pregnancy and deliveries
1. Community Health System
- Formation and supporting of Boma Health Committees
- Recruitment and training of Boma Health Teams and Supervisors
- Training of Home Health Promoters
- Health promotion, education and counselling based on Ministry of Health Basic Package of Health and Nutrition
- Provision of selected treatment packages (management of common childhood illnesses: malaria, pneumonia, diarrhoea)
- Provision of Preventive Chemotherapy for Neglected Tropical Diseases
- Case referral to health facilities for further management
- Community mobilization and defaulter tracing for EPI and TB/HIV
- Nutrition screening, education and referral for children and pregnant/lactating women
- Safe Motherhood and Newborn Health support and referrals
- Awareness, demand creation and support for Reproductive Health including Adolescent Sexual Reproductive Health and Family Planning
- Support of Community Management Information System
Community Engagement: Community and household-based health education and counselling with a focus on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights, Safe Motherhood and Gender Equity & Social Inclusion (GESI). Holistic community engagement with local/traditional/opinion leaders, religious leaders, school authorities, youth, women leaders, chiefs and Payam authorities. Engagement of men in issues of Gender Based Violence.
2. Emergency Obstetric and Neonatal Care (EmONC)
Basic emergency obstetric and newborn care is critical to reducing maternal and neonatal death. This care includes capabilities for:
- Administering antibiotics, uterotonic drugs (oxytocin) and anticonvulsants (magnesium sulphate)
- Manual removal of the placenta
- Removal of retained products following abortion
- Assisted vaginal delivery, preferably with vacuum extractor
- Performing Caesarean Sections
- Safe blood transfusion
- Basic neonatal resuscitation care
- Provision of care to sick and low-birth-weight newborns
Specific EmONC activities:
- Identify high risk labour and referral to county hospitals (CPD, obstructed labour, haemorrhages, fever, convulsions)
- Provide focused Postnatal Care
- Provide maternal and IECHC counselling
- Refer complicated cases to PNC and Child Health Clinic
- Initiate treatment for puerperal complications as soon as possible
- Raise awareness among families and communities about the importance of PNC, safe delivery, obstetric complications, and mother/child care during postnatal period
3. Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health (ASRH) & Family Planning
A youth-friendly package of health services comprising:
- Universal access to accurate sexual and reproductive health information
- A range of safe and affordable contraceptive methods
- Sensitive counselling
- Create awareness/demand for ASRH and encourage women and partners to accept FP/RH services
- Quality obstetric and antenatal care for all pregnant women and girls
- Prevention and management of sexually transmitted infections, including HIV/AIDS
- Provide counselling services for adolescents
- Family planning counselling and condom promotion
- Empowering young people to know and exercise their rights
4. Child Health
Comprehensive child health services including:
- Integrated Management of Childhood Illness (IMCI) – prevention and treatment of malaria, diarrhoea, ARI and pneumonia
- Mass campaigns for immunization
- Community based growth monitoring and promotion
- Home management of moderate malnutrition, vitamin A supplementation, periodic mass treatment for worms
- Referral of children with severe malnutrition to therapeutic feeding centres (TFCs)
- Early child development and child rights promotion
- Paediatric emergency triage, assessment and treatment of critically-ill children
Expanded Program of Immunization (EPI) activities:
- Provide routine and mobile EPI services
- Promote EPI among parents with defaulter tracing of under-5 immunisation
- Counsel and refer communities to attend mass outreach/mobile immunisation campaigns
- Conduct weekly surveillance and reporting of vaccine-preventable diseases
- Carry out monthly routine outreach mobile/static immunisation
- Conduct daily routine immunisation, five days a week at facility-based operation
5. Prevention & Control of Communicable & Endemic Diseases
A) Malaria
- Implement preventive measures to control mosquitoes
- Conduct community social mobilization and sensitization
- Develop IEC materials on Malaria prevention
- Conduct daily facility-based clinical diagnosis
- Establish microscopic diagnosis services at health facilities
- Treat uncomplicated cases (first and second line treatments)
- Treat severe and complicated cases
- Promote use of insecticide-treated mosquito nets
- Provide intermittent therapy to pregnant women
B) Tuberculosis (TB)
- Develop IEC materials
- Carry out early case detection through home health promoters
- Establish laboratory diagnosis services
- Conduct defaulter tracing
- Provide preventative therapy for children in contact with TB patients
- Provide DOTS-plus in multi-drug resistant TB
- Provide inpatient management of severe cases
C) STI, HIV/AIDS
- Develop IEC on STI and HIV including condom promotion and distribution
- Encourage prompt health care-seeking behaviour
- Support VCT and provider-initiated counselling and testing (PITC)
- Provide HIV/AIDS treatment and care including PMTCT
- Prevent and care for congenital syphilis and neonatal conjunctivitis
- Provide home-based care and adherence counselling for PLWHA
D) Diarrheal, Enteric Infections and Infestations
- Conduct IEC activities on causes and prevention of diarrhoea
- Encourage healthy infant feeding and weaning practices
- Provide safe water sources at health facilities and communities
- Promote hand washing behaviour
- Create awareness on participatory health and sanitation (PHAST)
- Promote immunisation against major preventable diseases
- Develop emergency preparedness for diarrhoeal outbreaks
- Treat mild cases (ORS) and severe cases (intravenous solution)
E) Acute Respiratory Infection
- Detect early signs of respiratory infection
- Manage respiratory infections in health facilities
- Refer complicated pneumonia cases to PHCCs and hospitals
6. Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs)
Almost all WHO-prioritised NTDs are endemic in South Sudan. Our interventions include:
- Develop and distribute IEC materials on NTD causes, dangers, impact and prevention
- Support Mass Drug Administration (MDA) according to WHO and Ministry of Health guidelines
- Capacitate health care workers on detection and management of NTDs
- Promote interventions to reduce contact with parasites/vectors
- Encourage construction and proper use of toilets, control water sources
7. Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs)
A) Diabetes and Hypertension
- Implement awareness, prevention and education programmes
- Conduct case detection
- Perform clinical and laboratory diagnosis services
- Treat uncomplicated and complicated cases
- Conduct defaulter tracing
B) Primary Eye Care
- Promote eye health through awareness and regular face washing
- Provide prevention commodities (water filters, tablets, slabs)
- Manage common eye diseases, especially topical antibiotics during outbreaks
- Collaborate with hospitals for surgical correction of eye conditions
